ACTION ALERTS

Help Stop Goose Hunt at Residential Center for Mentally Impaired Adults
11/04/99

Please help stop a Canada goose hunt at Keystone Community Residential Center, a home for mentally impaired adults in Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania.

The residents are going to be evacuated for the duration of the hunt. There is no justification for this extraordinary action. If you know others in the area, please alert them.

Please make a (very polite) call to the CEO, Bob Fleese or the owner Henry Deutsch both at (570) 346-7561. Leave a message on their voice mail if they are not taking calls.

Fax number for the agency is (570) 342-3461.

Also call Joy Smith, the Center's director at (570) 842-4521.

Deutch and Fleese have both told the Coalition they "have no plans for a hunt."
When asked for a commitment, they REFUSED.

Points to make:

  • Hunting/killing is NOT an effective way to address "goose problems."

  • It is irresponsible to have hunting seasons on the property of a residence.

  • There is no human health hazard from geese.

  • These hunts are nothing but a fundraiser for the game agencies who profit from the sale of hunting licenses and, in turn, Federal Pittman-Robertson Act money.

  • It is disgraceful to evacuate a residential facility so hunters can partake in their recreational killing.

  • Some geese are tame, some are crippled.

University of Minnesota Goose Killer to Strike Again!
06/16/98

University of Minnesota Professor of Fisheries and Wildlife James Cooper has been involved in the round up and slaughter of Canada Geese for the past three years. Along with the MN DNR, he is planning to slaughter thousands of Canada geese in the next few days.

OUR REQUEST: 2 minutes for a high impact telephone call or fax to University President Dr. Yudof. Details follow.

Please be very respectful. We believe Dr. Yudof to be an impartial and fair individual who will do what is best for the university.

1. Voice objection to the involvement of the university in the slaughter of Canada geese in Minnesota. How does this fit in with the role and mission of the university?

2. The University has received in excess of a quarter million dollars from municipalities and the Metro Airport Commission. Is the goose slaughter a fund raiser for the university?

3. Professor Cooper injected Canada Geese with lead without a permit from US Fish and Wildlife Service, a violation of federal law. Was Professor Cooper acting on approval from the animal care and use committee? Was Professor Cooper sanctioned by the University?

Dr. Yudof:

VOICE: (612) 626-1616
FAX: (612) 625-3875

The Minneapolis Canada Geese thank you.
