Coalition to Prevent the Destruction of Canada Geese

Border Collie Information Sheet

Summary

Border Collies (BC) are specially trained herding dogs that are extremely effective for keeping geese out of areas where they are considered a problem.

Application

Border collies are the method of choice for large open areas such as golf courses, airports, parks, school ground recreation fields, corporate parks, etc.

Effect on Geese

Results are immediate. Usually requires aggressive initial use (several times a day for 1-2 weeks) until geese get tired of being hassled and stay away.

While the wolf-like gaze of Border Collies is incredibly frightening to geese, these dogs will not harm them or children.

Cost/Availability

Cost is variable and depends on a variety of factors:

While purchasing a Border Collie from a trainer can run around $3000, Border Collies are sometimes available for no charge from organizations that specialize in rescue.

The alternative to owning a BC is to hire a Border Collie "service." The popularity of these services has grown in recent years. Different plans are available, ranging from yearly contracts to on-call visits, and are priced according to frequency of visits and the size of the area(s) involved.
